Citing Images

MLA Appendix Format with Images

Here's how to correctly format an appendix containing an image in MLA style:

1. Appendix Placement

  • Place the appendix after your Works Cited page.
  • If you have multiple appendices, label them Appendix A, Appendix B, etc. If you have only one, simply title it Appendix.

2. Appendix Header

Center the label at the top of a new page, using the same text font and size as your paper:
(Remember, for MLA formatting you use  Times New Roman, 12pt.)

Appendix A

3. Image Format Within the Appendix

Below the header, include the image with a figure label, caption, and source:

Fig. 1. A brief descriptive caption explaining the image. Source: Author Last Name, First Name. Title of Work. Publisher, Year, p. #.

Key elements:

  • Figure label — Use "Fig." followed by a number (eg. Fig. 1.). Bold it for clarity.
  • Caption — A short description of what the image shows, placed directly below the image.
  • Source credit — Cite the original source of the image after the caption in MLA format.

4. In-Text Reference

You must refer to the appendix in your paper's body. For example:

In the story we see CJ and Nana sitting on the bus with the other riders, and Nana makes sure they both greet each rider (see Appendix, Fig. 1).
